Capone had suffered from syphilis, and that is well documented. He was treated with antibiotics in Baltimore for some time before he was allowed to leave for his home on Palm Island, Florida.

Capone was infected with a contagious disease but managed to continue on a sexual relationship with his wife "Mae." As a result of that relationship "Mae" became pregnant with a boy. The boy was named "Sonny" and he was born with congenital syphilis even though his mother was never diagnosed with the disease. Al was being treated with antibiotics throughout the remainder of his life.

Sonny lived to be into his 80's. He never followed into his father's footsteps, and never lived a life of crime--he had received a misdemeanor citation once. During his long life, he was never diagnosed with insanity, never delusional, and never contracted dementia. His mother,Mae, lived to be 89 years old, never contracted syphilis, and died in a nursing home in Hollywood, Florida, of old age.

There are many inconsistencies regarding Al Capone's bout with syphilis. When he was free from Alcatraz penitentiary he was not debilitated and was ambulatory. Yet he was diagnosed with neurological syphilis.

Mae took the ferry from Fisherman's Wharf, a few blocks from downtown San Francisco, Ca. The Wharf is nearer to China Town and North beach near the Marina. Today, anyone can catch a tour from any of the ferry's that offer tours to Alcatraz from the same Wharf. Mae got on the ferry and was on her way to Alcatraz Island just a few miles from the city. The Island can easily be seen from anywhere on the San Francisco side of the bay. From Oakland the sister city of from San Francisco, Alcatraz can easily be seen a lot easier than from the Golden Gate bridge. When it is foggy and cold, the island can't be seen; but on a clear day, the typical sounds from the bay are the many seagulls aloft on a cold breeze, and the sound of fog horns coming from the nearby Coast guard station. Today the fog horns are silent since a new law went into effect prohibiting the fog horns from sounding on the bay. When she reached the Island, Al was free to join his wife, and they both walked to the dock were the ferry was waiting. Al, walked with his wife and didn't need help walking--a sign that there was no neurological damage from the disease--no brain damage. From there they took a train from Oakland to Terminal Island in Los Angeles to serve a one year misdemeanor charge. (Wikipedia).

Capone was diagnosed with neurosyphilis but when he was released from Alcatraz he walked accompanied with his wife to the ferry. When He finally arrived home, Al engaged in many meetings with former friends--and this is a sign that Al was in a frame of mind to talk with friends and showed no signs of having brain damage.

To diagnose a person with brain damage or neurological problems, some of the symptoms are the the inability to walk, talk, and engage in conversation--Al Capone had showed no signs of being debilitated, once released from Alcatraz. The signs in question are his complaints of ghosts in his cell, whom he believed had followed him to Alcatraz prison from Eastern State Penitentiary--and finally the haunting that continued at his home on Palm Island, Florida. I believe that after arriving home the haunting continued and had weakened Capone physically. In other words he was terrorized to death, and this is what caused him to suffer two heart attacks and pneumonia.
